The degree of control that a timeshare owner can have over the time, duration, and location of his timeshare credit usage depends a lot on the nature of his timeshare purchase.  There are different kinds of timeshares, each with its own specific arrangements and stipulations.  Generally, the degree of a timeshare owner’s control would differ a lot between timeshares that are sold on a weekly basis or through a points system.

Taking a look first at the timeshares which are sold on the basis of one week units, we will see that you can either buy a fixed week every year or a floating week.  That is, the fixed week means you can only use the timeshare unit during that specified week every year.  As for the floating week, you have a little more flexibility as you can choose any week – as long as a unit is available – within a specified period of time.  As you can see, for this type of timeshare purchase, the timeshare owner basically picks the period that he wants to use.  Seen in this light, you have absolute control over when you want to use your timeshare, but you cannot change it at a whim.  Also, there are times when you might have to settle for the week which isn’t your first choice, especially if other people have already purchased that week before you.  As for the location, you do have a chance to spend your vacation elsewhere but you would have to find a willing exchange partner first.  This is of course possible but may be quite a tedious process.

As for the points system, you generally get a more flexible array of choices.  What happens is that you can go on a vacation and use your timeshare credits for a few days or a full week, depending on your preferences.  If you do not use up the whole duration of your stay, you still have some credits left on your account.  This is not the case with the previous arrangement we discussed.  Another thing, with the points system, you may have more chances of exchanging your points for other places.  This is because the trading organization has operations around the world.  As such, you have more choices when it comes to the location.  Again, this is opposed to the previous arrangement which might be a bit more difficult in this respect.
