How flexible is timeshare usage? Can I change my assigned time?
The flexibility of timeshare usage depends on the type of timeshare that you have purchased. Again, depending on your timeshare’s nature, you can either change your assigned time or be resigned to using your property at specified times each year. There are several types of timeshares.
The three main types which should concern the person who wants to know about the flexibility of timeshare usage are: fixed, floating, and rotating. Of course, there are other types of timeshares dependent on different factors but these are the three that directly affect the period of stay in the timeshare property.
In general, timeshares are sold using a week as a unit. That is, you can buy a timeshare for at least a week in the year and increase your purchase by adding a week at a time. Timeshare companies normally number the weeks starting with the first calendar week of the year. So for example, you want a week’s worth of vacation sometime in July, you can purchase Week 27. If you want multiple weeks, then you can get Week 27 and 28 or you can get Week 27 and Week 42.
Now, for fixed timeshares, you can only use your property on the specific week or weeks that you have purchased. If, as in the example above, you have purchased Week 27, then you can only take your vacation during that week. There is really no room for flexibility – that is, unless you find someone else with a timeshare who would want to exchange weeks with you.
For floating timeshares, you have more flexibility in terms of the time of usage. In general, you have to specify the number of weeks for your purchased timeshare. You would also have to pick out a specific period in which you can use your weeks. For example, you choose the summer period. You can pick out any week with in that period to use your timeshare.
The last kind, rotating, is used by resort owners in an effort to give timeshare owners the chance to use a different week each year. As the name implies, the timeshare owners rotate, taking turns on different weeks.
As you can see, flexibility depends mainly on the type of timeshare you opt for. So when considering a purchase, also bear in mind your needs and preferences in order to avoid dissatisfaction later on.
